How does backup and restore work

I'm on a standard, OpenVZ based service, which is said to include "daily and weekly backups". How does backup actually work? Do you just somehow make a copy of the virtual disk? How long back can I request a restore?

daily and weekly backups are generated by default for the Standard VPS. However, restoration of such backups is paid service and costs 9.99 EUR. Every copy overwrites the previous one, so the longest copy we have is basically a little over a week.
